Međimurje County, the northernmost Croatian region, and the City of Szigetvar, Hungary, have always been at the crossroads of cultures. The region’s history has been strongly influenced by the energy, courage, the decisiveness of its people, and the battles for unity and survival. The culture, identity and achievements of these regions were deeply influenced in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Zrinski family. They were aristocrats, military leaders, Croatian bans and landowners. For centuries they led exceptionally successful lives in extremely hard general social conditions.
Their contemporaries have recognized their importance not only in the region but also throughout Europe. French Cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis Richelieu even claimed that Nicholas IV. Zrinski’s leadership and courageous defense at the Battle of Svigetvar against the Ottoman Empire “saved civilization.”
Through these thematic routes, tourists can experience first-hand how the Zrinskis shaped the wider region.
We look forward to your visit!
